What should I do if I notice a change in a loved one at Christmas?

Dec 13, 2019
As Christmas is approaching, families make plans to get together and reunite for this festive time of year. With many people seeing family members for the first time in a while, changes in a loved one can be more noticeable than if you were to see them every day. It can be normal - especially with the older members of the family - to notice these changes. Perhaps you notice a decline in their health, mood and overall temperament.

Problems that may have been hidden during the year can come to the surface when families and friends get together over the festive season”, Said NHS England expert Professor Alistair Burns.

Recognising the signs of Dementia

Changes you may notice in their mood and behaviour can be one of the first signs of dementia. Other signs can include issues with memory, difficulty performing familiar tasks, disorientation and becoming withdrawn from social activities.

So, what can you do?

Signs of dementia, or general decline in health of loved ones can be difficult to process. If you think one of your family members is declining, it is important that you encourage them to see a GP as soon as possible. If you need advice, call your GP and they can best advise you on the next steps you and your family should take.

When the time has come to get some help

If you and your family members feel that the time has come to source some outside help, you will need to consider your options. Whether a family member is prepared to care for a loved one and needs some occasional support, or perhaps you are looking for full support and peace of mind, home care can be a great option.
